There is no Planet B

This month Land Studio Director Lisa Sawyer has reviewed the book There Is No Planet B by Mike Berners-Lee.

The best-seller looks at everything from climate change and biodiversity to plastics and pandemics and asks what is most pressing and what should we tackle first.

Lisa said: “Whilst I am comfortable to speak about the changes we are making at Land Studio to help the challenges of climate change through our nature based solutions, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and powerless by the scale of the economic and environmental challenges in the world and how we could make a difference in our family life.

“So I decided to read this brilliant book after seeing that it was written as a simple handbook with useful stats (I am an engineer after all), insights and bite size pieces of practical advice on what businesses, governments and individuals can do to help humanity thrive.

“I liked the way it was broken down into areas such as food production and consumption, energy, biodiversity and travel to name a few. It’s also the sort of book that you can put down and come back to at any time.

“It asks questions on how we live and think. Last weekend, as a family, we asked ourselves some of those questions. Do we consume too much meat? Do we really need that piece of fruit which has flown miles around the world? Is there more we can do to recycle and reuse our water? Do we need that second car?

“We have already started to make some simple, easy changes. I think the book will be used as a reference in the future when, no doubt, we lose our way a bit and need reminding that there is No Planet B.”
