They’re prickly, a bit shy, one of the UK’s most-loved species and are declining at a rapid rate.

British hedgehogs face numerous threats which is why we are supporting a scheme by Chester Zoo to protect them.

Chester Zoo is looking for local residents to survey their back garden using motion-activated cameras which they can then feed back into a big citizen science project.

Lisa Sawyer, who recently joined the scheme, said: “We’ve been out in the gardens most evenings relaxing or working on our vegetable patch.

“The other evening, around dusk, I spotted our friendly local hedgehog which was brilliant as I’ve recently set up one of the Zoo’s motion-activated cameras camera and was very keen to get his photograph.

“I love hedgehogs and the Chester Zoo scheme is a brilliant idea and will help to build up a better picture of how hedgehogs use our green spaces.”
